Community History

  • On June 20, 1905, the Chaffee Real Estate Company of St. Louis, Missouri purchased 1,800 acres of land from local farmer John Witt of Sikeston, Missouri
  • Shortly thereafter, the company transferred 150 acres to the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway to build a large switching yard
  • The area was then surveyed and developed as a town for railroad employees

The railroad has remained an important part of the community since its founding. The Burlington Northern Railroad still operates a depot in Chaffee today. Railroad history can also be seen in the mural located at Yoakum and Main Streets, painted by local artist Aaron Horrell.
